In the first of a new series, we invited two leading experts to respond to Fabien Truong’s recent paper Total rioting: from metaphysics to politics, before the author responds in turn. 

In the first response, Joshua Clover queries the focus on the subjective and argues for the indispensability of a dialectical account of the riot

In the second response, Marie-Hélène Bacqué discusses what is at stake in how we define 'riots' and their participants.

Finally, the author responds, arguing for an understanding of riots as totality and reflecting on the importance of context
